With an approximate population of 410,950, and urban area of 550,200, it is England's sixth, and the United Kingdom's ninth most populous city, one of England's core cities and the most populous city in South West England. It received a royal charter in 1155 and was granted county status in 1373. For half a millennium it was the second or third largest English city, until the rapid rise ofLiverpool, Birmingham and Manchester in the Industrial Revolution in the later part of the 18th century. Bath is a city in Somerset in the south west of England. It is situated 99 miles (159km) west of London and 13 miles (21 km) south-east of Bristol. The population of the city is about 80,000.[1] It was granted city status by Royal Charter by QueenElizabeth I in 1590,[2] and was made a county borough in 1889 which gave itadministrative independence from its county, Somerset. The city became part ofAvon when that county was created in 1974. Since 1996, when Avon was abolished, Bath has been the principal centre of the unitary authority of Bath and North East Somerset (B&NES), a part of the wider Somerset county.
